I do not want to deal with statistics or programming during my Master’s.
Statistics and Programming are central to the program. Without the motivation to develop either of these skills students will not be able to develop as neuroscientists.
Therefore, if you do not want to work with Statistics or Programming the Cognitive Neurosicence MSc program may not be the perfect choice for you.
With this Master’s program I want to gain the skills and knowledge to continue my studies as a PhD student.
While the main focus of the program is for students to develop into high class PhD candidates, there are other job opportunities which are available to graduates of the program such as work in neuromarketing or developmental game industries.
I would like to prepare myself with this Master’s program for work in a clinical setting.
The MCNB MSc program is NOT designed for students with a desire to continue their careers as psychiatrists, psychologists or other jobs in a clinical setting. If you want to follow one of these paths then the Psychology MSc program may be a better fit for you.
I am interested in neuroscientific topics and I am want to learn the methods behind the research.
With the MCNB program's focus on statistics, programming and neurocognitive methods you will be able to gain insight into how all of the neuroscience data has been generated as well as understand the details of the statistical tests performed!
Reading complex texts in English is not a problem for me and I can easily and clearly express myself in English on different topics.
Because the entire program is taught in English you should feel comfortable reading in English and the program, through it's many presentation opportunities, enables students to develop their scientific English presentation skills.
I work independently and enjoy reading scientific texts.
The schedule of the program is relatively relaxed, often with long periods where students are not necessarily required to complete any homework. These periods are intended for students to pursue their own interests without guidance from the professors and so prospective students should be able to motivate themselves in order to discover what opportunities are available for them in Berlin and other cities.
I have not studied Neuroscience, Psychology or Cognitive Science however I am really interested in the Master’s program and I am ready to work hard to familiarize myself with the background topics and methods.
Because the program is designed for students with such a background it does not cover many of the more basic concepts. Thus, if you are lacking such a background, you may have to work harder at the beginning of the program in order to understand concepts and theories which others have learned in their Bachelor studies. Students are welcome to ask their lecturers for recommendations on background reading to help in this regard.
I would like to work as a student assistant ("HiWi") during my Master’s.
The program's class schedule is very sparse and so students have a lot of spare time which can be used for student jobs such as working as a research assistant in a lab or any other activity they would like.
I don't speak any German – but I can study in English so this shouldn't be a problem for me.
Berlin is a very international city and German is not necessarily required in order to navigate it, however it is very helpful. While the Freie Universität only offers German classes for those above level A2, both the Technische Universität and Humboldt Universität offer A1 level courses which students of the Cognitive Neuroscience program are welcome to take for a nominal fee.
I want to do an internship abroad during my studies.
Students of the Cognitive Neuroscience program are encouraged to visit other institutions to work in a lab of their choice however the students must prepare all of the required documentation in advance themselves.
I want to further develop my scientific presentation and writing skills.
The majority of the modules require some sort of presentation from the students. This helps the students develop their scientific English and presentation skills. Furthermore, reading a large amount of scientific litterature, both for the courses, as well as in preparation for the MSc project helps develop the students' writing abilities.
