GeoCampus Lankwitz

The Department of Earth Sciences comprises three institutes: Geological Sciences, Geographical Sciences, and Meteorology. The Institutes of Geological and Geographical Sciences are located on the GeoCampus in Lankwitz; Meteorology is nearby in Steglitz  (visit their adress-page here).

History

The tract of today’s GeoCampus Lankwitz developed as barracks on the remnant village of Lankwitz throughout 1913 up until 1915 for recruitment and training of the garrison Berlin-Lankwitz. After the end of the first world war the barracks continued serving the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht (air raid defenses). Air raids devastatingly hit the barracks in the year 1943.

The buildings of the college of education (Pädagogische Hochschule) were constructed from 1960 until 1964 after the plans of the famous West-Berlin post-war architect Bruno Grimmek. In 1980 the complex of buildings came into the ownership of the Freie Universität Berlin. Today the tract is mainly used by the Department of Earth Sciences.
